Eiffel Tower from Sacre Couer

Paris - Day 4

We decided to have a slow morning and sauntered down for breakfast at about 09:30.  After our unusual breakfast we set off for a walk around the Latin quarter of Paris.

We took in Saint Severin’s church and a Salvador Dali sundial on our trek before stumbing across Brasserie Balzar (the apparently famous hang out for arty people).  This part of the city is very different to anywhere else and the mixture of new and old architecture is intriguing.

Once we’d finished the walk suggested in our guide book we jumped on the metro to the Biblioteque Francois Metterand, which apparently holds over 10 million books.  We stopped for some lunch here whilst trying to comprehend the shear magnitude of the four library buildings.

After a quick trip around the library we crossed town to the Museum of Science and Industry.  Unfortunately, the entry fee was too steep for us so we did everything we could for free and set off for Saint Michel and another ‘guide book walk’.

We chose to walk on the two islands in the Seine by Notre Dame as we hadn’t been there before.  The streets were very narrow meaning that human traffic was heavy but we made it into Berthillon for some posh ice creams and found a chocolate shop which had bars of 100% cocoa chocolate.  Needless to say, Claire got a bar!

On our travels we came across a restaurant, the Auberges Des Deux Ponts, which had frogs legs with provencale.  Later on we returned and had one of the best meals of our lives.  The waiter was great with us and the food was sensational.

Walking around the two islands and Notre Dame in the evening is special and I would recommend it to anyone.  You really do see the city differently.

Tonight was the last of our trip and we felt we’d had a fantastic time.  Tomorrow we need to be up early for our flight so we had whisked a sneaky handful of mints from the hotel reception and had an early night.
