Riga - Day 3

I slept much better last night.  We had one other person in our dorm last night who went to great lengths in order to keep quiet, but ultimately failed miserably.

Some British backpackers were already in the kitchen when we arrived.  They somehow managed to nearly take up all the free space available in the kitchen so we quickly downed our strange fruit tea breakfasts and left the hostel.

St Peter’s cathedral was our first port of call.  We paid our L2s and got the lift up to the top.  The views were tremendous although the cold was bracing to say the least.  Despite the cold we thoroughly enjoyed the views and could see all the way out to the Baltic Sea.

We decided to take a visit to Sigulda tomorrow and so headed towards the train station to collect train times.  However, no clues were being given away so we left empty handed.  Still at least we know where the train station is for tomorrow’s trip.

With the much advertised ‘Ham and Cheese’ café relatively close by we decided to have our lunch there.  It was very pleasant but not really offering the Latvian cuisine we were hoping for.

After lunch we spent most of the afternoon in the National War Museum, Museum of the History of Latvia and the Dome cathedral.  Claire even managed to get us in to the Dome cathedral for free by going in via the chapel entrance as opposed to the tourist entrance.  Well done Claire!

With tea time approaching we made the quick dash to the Skyline Bar on the 26th floor of the Riga Reval Hotel to get yet more glorious views of the city.

We zoomed back to the hostel for a change, in preparation for the opera tonight, and went out in search of somewhere cheap for tea.

After another incredibly cheap tea we went to the National Opera House.  The opera lasted three and a half hours and was a really powerful and thought provoking production (in Russian not Latvian).  We were a little pleased when it finished though!  We decided to pay another visit to the Reval Hotel Skyline Bar for a ‘Cesu’ beer, then it was back to the hostel and off to bed.
