Russia - Day 10

Surprisingly I felt fresh and sharp this morning despite the early get up.  I met Rachel, John and Snowy in the reception as we waited for our taxi.  Julia was travelling to Tallinn by bus and wasn’t due to leave for another hour so she stayed in bed.  I can fully understand that!  Alex, our taxi driver, arrived with the radio booming and a great big smile.

Our journey to Pulkovo Airport was reasonably incident free and we joined the vast queues, which Russians seem to love so much.  Having finished with our fifth queue we all had our boarding cards and were sat in he departures lounge, which pretty much resembled a small cowshed!  We made sure that we had everyone’s email addresses and phone numbers so we could keep in touch back in Britain.  The only thing left to do was to see if we could find a policeman passing by who could help Snowy report last night’s incident.

We had to board our flights before Snowy got the chance to report his crime so it looks like he will have to visit the Russian Embassy in London.  We said our goodbyes and went our separate ways.  They were boarding a flight supposedly going to London Gatwick although they could be connecting in Moscow instead of going directly.  In traditional Russian style nobody had any information about the flight.  At least I knew about my flight!

On board the Air France flight to Paris I got talking to a French woman about my travels.  Surprisingly, my French held up well and we had a good chat on the flight.  We also had a mandatory lunatic on the plane who annoyed everyone and insisted on washing people’s breakfast dishes before giving them back to the cabin crew.  Why do I seem to attract these people!  He eventually left us alone when we started reading our newspapers.  Today is the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings and the newspaper was full of articles commemorating the day that changed the world.

I caught my connecting flight in Paris and within an hour I was in sunny old Manchester.  After an hour on the train I had made it home.  This had probably been my most ambitious trip so far and I managed to prove and disprove various theories I previously had about Russia.  All I can say is what a magnificent trip it was!
